Holden was host to large numbers of people this past week as the chamber of commerce celebrated yet another successful fall fiesta.

According to Michelle Guinn, fair board chairman, attendance was up from previous years and ticket sales for the midway also increased.

We had a big crowd at the kids tractor pull and it was a huge success. The parade was also bigger this year and the weather on Saturday was perfect for such an occasion, she added.

Guinn did say she was disappointed with the number of talent show entries and added the fair board would focus on generating more interest in that program next year. Agricultural exhibits were also down but that she attributes, in part, to the drought conditions this summer.

The fair board begins meeting every January to select a theme and initiate plans for the annual fair and Guinn expressed her appreciation to all those who contributed. She praised the help of the following people who she says were instrumental in the fairs success: Misty Haun, Jenny Sollars, Phil Brillhart, Dwight Anstine, Pat Zvacek, Cindy Reynolds and Linda Frazier.

There were also a number of volunteers who assist at the community activity center and in other areas as well.

Guinn also thanked everyone in the community for their continued support of the fair.

The Holden R-III Foundation recently accepted a $5,000 donation from Hal Oppenheimer in memory of Zachary Bryan Timmons, a Holden student who was tragically killed in an automobile accident two years ago.

The donation was given in his name after his mother, Elizabeth and his two aunts, Kendra Lee and Dawn Myers, all Holden graduates, contacted the foundation this past summer.

The money was earmarked for the Holden Elementary School and the Zack Timmons Scholarship. Zacks mother worked with Principal Robyn Sisk to select a round area rug, small couch and chair set, a small bookshelf, a large wooden double rocker and a childs wooden rocker that are all part of a reading corner in the Holden Elementary/Intermediate Library.

Children in Candy Johnsons kindergarten room will benefit from the purchase of items for many writing and listening centers.

In addition, students receiving speech services will now have access to many valuable speech software programs purchased with this donation.

Oppenheimer, a Kansas City-based entrepreneur and financial banker who is familiar with the accident and tragic loss, says he is glad the foundation could assist Mrs. Timmons with the memorial.

Elizabeth Timmons is grateful for the foundations donation in Zacharys name.

This means a great deal to me. The elementary school was very dear to Zachary and during his time there, he benefited from wonderful teachers such as his kindergarten instructor, Candy Johnson and speech therapist Dana VanMeter Patton. I wanted to make sure their extra efforts with my son did not go unnoticed. the donation will help the students remember him for years to come and will help the teachers with the extras they might not have been able to afford otherwise.
