The Holden Farmers' Market opened its stalls for the fourth year Saturday and according to Jo Ann Nolan, "Opening day was a big success."
On hand to help with the opening day festivities was Doug E. Dawg, disc jockey from KIX 105.7, who broadcast his show live from the market. Capturing the spirit of the day, he also wore a tomato costume which was provided by the Missouri Department of Agriculture.
Making the day even more special was an appearance by the LifeFlight Eagle helicopter ambulance. The crew of the air ambulance made a grand entrance by circling downtown Holden before landing at the City Park. The crew of the chopper gave visitors tours of the ambulance and were also interviewed by Doug E. Dawg.
Nolan also stated that she wanted to thank the Holden Fire Department for being on hand and coordinating the landing of the Eagle, "Without their efforts and cooperation it wouldn't have been possible," she added.
Throughout the day, the Fire Department also provided educational and fire safety materials for all. The department is in need of volunteer firemen and if anyone is interested, they can contact Chief Larry Miller at 732-4811.
Although the day was made special by all the visitors, there were also plenty of food and specialty items for sale.
Besides the normal fruits and vegetables, market-goers could purchase fresh cinnamon rolls, coffee, eggs, photographic prints, greeting cards, freshly-baked breads and cookies, barbeque, hand-made furniture and much more.
Also on hand was Katherine Corkran of the Holden History Book Committee in her pioneer dress to take orders for the sesquicentennial history book.
The Farmers' Market is sponsored by the Holden Area Chamber of Commerce and is open every Saturday morning at 7 a.m. rain or shine at the Holden City Park.
There is no fee to sell at the market, but according to Nolan, everyone has to register. For more information, call Nolan at 598-3353 or enquire by email at info@holdenmarket.com. The market's website is located at www.holdenmarket.com.
The Holden R-III Foundation held a golf tournament in April with eight teams participating. Approximately $2,000 was raised for the foundation.
The following hole sponsors supported the tournament: Shore Construction/Holden Package, Holden Fast/Kingsville Fastop, Pleasant Hill Fastop, Halbhuber and Cook, certified public accountants, the family of Tina Van Meter and Robey Farms, F&C Bank, Bank of Holden, Embarq, Flick Seed Company and Strate's Plumbing and SLS Construction, Sturgis Realty, Daniel and Kelli Spies, Godfather's Pizza, Paul and Sharon Campo and Pittsville PDQ.
Aquila, Inc. will soon raise rates in and around the Holden area.
The order affects Aquila customers in the company's Missouri Public Service region. For the typical customer in the MPS area using 1,000 kilowatts (kwh) a month, their bill will increase approximately $9.73. The new rate became effective on May 31.
Aquila had requested the rate increase to pay for new capacity to serve increased demand, ongoing investments in the company's distribution system, raising operating maintenance costs, as well as higher fuel (both natural gas and coal) and purchased power costs. Over the past 25 years, Aquila's typical residential customers' use of electricity has increased 42 percent, and the company customer base has risen 58 percent.
The commission's order also implemented a fuel adjustment law passed by the state legislature in 2005. Under the order, Aquila will be able to recover 95 percent of its fuel costs not already reflected in rates. However, any adjustment for fuel costs will not be included on customer's bills for at least eight months while actual data is being collected and evaluated. During this time an FAC (Fuel Adjustment Clause) line will appear on bills, but will show a zero charge.

Holden's senior citizen community and some of the city's youth bridged generation gaps recently and came together on a project to revitalize the senior center on Second Street in downtown Holden.
Members of Lisa Fee's painting class at Holden High School and other student volunteers just completed a project painting panels depicting scenes to be installed in the center's second-story windows.
The project was the brainchild of rural Holden resident Nancy Maxwell, who is a member of the board of directors of the Holden Senior Center. Maxwell had noticed scenes in the second-story windows of old buildings in LaCrosse, WI, and thought they would help to "spruce up" the senior center's face.
"The scene panels were in windows of old cheese and tobacco factories and they really made the buildings look a lot nicer," explained Maxwell. "I also knew that the front of the senior center needed revitalizing for beauty as well as safety as the second-story windows had been boarded up years ago. I thought that the project would also fit right in with Holden's 2008 Sesquicentennial celebration."
Since funds for the senior center are in short supply, Maxwell approached the high school and asked if art students would consider taking on the project. "I also thought it would be a wonderful way to foster mutual appreciation between the youth and senior citizens of Holden."
At the high school office, Maxwell was directed to Fee and the art teacher and her students decided to undertake the project. After completing some already planned curriculum, Fee and her students got to work on the panels. The wood panels were provided by the senior center and the school provided leftover paint to complete the scenes. There was also money that was donated out of individuals' pockets.
Painting students Christine Bradfield, Faith Williams, Josh Davis and Mickey Laeupple began the project along with ceramics student volunteers Sarah Stadter and Brittany Mueller.
As a matter of fact, explained Fee, Stadter and Mueller were very excited about the project and finished as much as three-fourths of the work actually completed. "They even came back after school was out to finish up," she continued.
Fee said that the girls learned a lot from the project and she feels that it will also really enhance the looks of downtown Holden.
Stadter and Mueller both said they enjoyed working on the project and they both expressed joy in helping out the community. "I'm looking forward to seeing the scenes when they are installed in the windows," explained Mueller.
"This was a cool thing to do," stated Stadter. "I'm excited to see the scenes in the window as well and I think it would be good if other buildings did the same thing."
Chamber of Commerce president Dennis Mason is also happy about the project. "I'm really glad Nancy took the initiative to come up with the great idea to help beautify and renovate the downtown area," Mason stated "This project will tie in beautifully with our sesquicentennial celebration next year. A big thanks to the senior center and the high school for supporting this community project."
After viewing the finished products last week at the high school, Maxwell exclaimed, "They're just fantastic. I'm so thrilled. They look just like I pictured them. I'm so happy I asked the school, they did a beautiful job and our thanks go out to Lisa and the students who painted the scenes."
