Hundreds of area residents braved 20-degree weather and filled the streets of downtown Holden last Friday evening for the town’s annual Customer Appreciation Night.

Though the cold cut sort the activities by some 45 minutes, organizers of the event were happy with the turnout.

“Given the weather, we were all pleased with the number of people who came,” said Holden Image Co-Publisher, John Roberts, one of the event’s planners.

“Several of the entertainment venues were packed and all seemed to have a good time, especially the children,” he said.

Cindy Reynolds, another organizer who is employed at Heiman’s True Value echoed those thoughts.

“We were busy and had a great turnout,” she said. “People had a lot of fun and a big thank you is due to all of the sponsors, merchants and volunteers who helped to make this happen,” she added. “We’re hoping for even  bigger and better things next year.”

Throughout the evening a number of activities were available for all ages. Among them were store discounts and extended hours, musical entertainment, trolley rides, clowns doing face painting and animal balloons, Santa posing for pictures with children, a live Nativity scene and homemade cookies, coffee and hot chocolate.

Also, a number of drawings for free gifts were held. Among the winners were: Brenda Miller, Janet Timme, Adam Reynolds, Tina Walker, Eric Stout (F&C savings bonds); Doug Warren, Mary McConville, Amy Tevis, Eric Stoyko, Darcy Roach (Bank of Holden savings bonds); Sheila Stout, Bill Flaspohler, Matt Collins, Kim Morrow, Celest Hough, Hailey Pemberton (Chamber Bucks); Rhonda Barwick, Donna Cook, Andrea Arbogast, Karlie Knowles, Jim Nipko and Sue Warren (Mocha Locha gift certificate).

The Holden High School boys’ varsity basketball team got their season off to a good start as they crushed neighboring Crest Ridge, 52-18 last Tuesday in “Pack the Gym” night in the HHS gymnasium.

The Eagles used smothering defense and 57 percent shooting from beind the arc to bury the Cougars early, grabbing a 27-13 halftime lead.  seniors Andrew Sanderson and Travis Wescott led the offensive onslaught scoring 19 and 14 respectively in the rout.  Sanderson, who missed last year because of a knee injury suffered in the second game of the season was three of seven from behind the arc and Wescott was four of six.

Junior Zak Anstine, who head coach Dale Wescott credits for “doing an awesome job in on-the-ball defense, drained the other three pointer as Holden shot eight of 14 from long range.

The boys also had a very high assist to made-baskets ration, dishing 14 assists to 20 made-buckets.  They also had a high assist to turnover ratio, committing only six turnovers on the way to 14 assists.  Sanderson and Anstine both accounted for four assists and only two turnovers apiece, while Bryce Evans dished three dimes with no turnovers, and Wescott had two turnovers and no assists as well.

Even with the glossy statistics, Coach Wescott said he wasn’t happy with the offense.  “We struggled some but our outside game was good.  We’re going to have to be a lot better on our inside game.  We only had a rebounding edge of five.  We have to be alot better than that,” Wescott stated.

Wescott added that he felt that this edition of the Eagles will be one of the best three-point shooting teams he has had since he arrived in Holden.

The coach was very pleased with the defensive effort of his team.  “We were really good defensively,” he praised.  “I know there are things that we need to work on, but when you hold a team to under 20 points you’ve had a good defensive game.”

Individual statistics for the contest include:  Sanderson, 19 points, two rebounds and four assists; Wescott, 14 points, three rebounds and two assists; Anstine, six points, two rebounds and four assists; Taylor McConville, six points; Evans, four points, seven rebounds and three assists; Deron Binkley, three points and four rebounds; Trevor Yancey, one rebound and Michael Garten, one assist.

Coach Wescott also named his players of the game.  They are, co-offensive players of the game, Sanderson and Wescott; Defensive, Anstine; and sixth-man, McConville.

After another home game Tuesday night with Renaissance Academy of Kansas City, the boys will compete in the 2007 Husker Classic, December 3 through 8,  to be held in Higginsville.

The Eagles will get a chance to meet many of their conference opponents they will face next year as they move into the Missouri River Valley Conference.

Holden received a four-seed in the tourney and will play Odessa in their opener, December 4 at 7:30 p.m. in the east gym.  If they win that contest, they will take on the winner of one-seed Higginsville and eight-seed Carrollton, December 6 at 6 p.m., also in the east gym.

Also competing in the tourney are richmond, Brookfield, Boonville and Lexington.
