Care Connections for Aging Services volunteers will again assist older persons in filing their federal and state income tax from the first week of February through April 15.
Assistance will also be given to those 65 and older and those of any age who have been certified as totally and permanently disabled to see if they qualify for a rebate based  on the previous year’s income and taxes or rent paid on one’s homestead.  One’s homestead can be one’s home, apartment, mobile home, nursing or boarding home.
Contact the nearest senior center for the time and day assistance will be provided and find out if one, one’s spouse, parent or friend might be eligible for a refund.  Remember, it is not necessary that one file federal or state income taxes in order to receive a “circuit breaker” rebate.
It is necessary that  one bring their statement of social security payments made in 2007. (SSA 1099).  This statement will be mailed out in early January; save it and bring it and all other statements of income; interest, dividends, retirement, etc. that one received in 2007.  If one owned a home for a part of, or for the whole year of 2007, bring one’s 2007 city and county real estate tax receipt and/or proof of rent paid on one’s homestead.  If one filed last year, bring a copy of last year’s filing.
Tax assistor Nancy Jones will be at the Holden Senior Center on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to noon.  Call the center for an appointment at 816-732-5757.

Holden Idol and a catered dinner from Jamie’s Place will be held March 1 at the high school gymnasium.  Dinner will start at 6 p.m. and consist of a taco dinner.  Holden Idol will begin at 7 p.m.
There will be three judges from outside of the district for the competition.  There will be a first, second and third place winner selected.  The biggest difference in this year’s competition is they are allowing students to enter who play a musical instrument as well as those who sing.
There will also be a contest to rename the competition.  Kids kindergarten through 12th grade are eligible to enter and the winner will receive a $20 gift card from Sonic.  This event is sponsored by the Holden Music Booster Club.  They  need people to RSVP as soon as possible.  A copy of the rules will be available upon request.  Sign-up sheets will be posted around the schools.
Admission will be $5 for just the competition and $7 for the competition and dinner if tickets are purchased in advance.  At the door, they will be $7 for the competition only and $10 for the competition and dinner.
There will be a winner from each age category, and a grand prize winner from those three.

Republican Scott Largent has announced his candidacy for the 120th District House of Representative seat which will be vacated by Shannon Cooper due to term limits.
Serving as the Henry County coroner for the past three years, Largent is a resident of Clinton and seeks to represent the 120th district which covers portions of rural Holden south of the city as well the rest of southern Johnson County, Henry County and portions of Bates County.
In his candidacy letter, Largent stated that “Serving the public is an honor and a privilege and is something that I take very seriously.”
He further stated that “Education will be a priority for me in Jefferson City.  We are quite fortunate to have great schools in our area and we deserve someone in the legislature who will work tirelessly to secure their funding.  I will be a strong advocate for education and will work to make our schools even better.”
Being a small business owner, Largent states that he understands how excessive taxes and unnecessary government regulations can stifle growth.  “I will help create a climate where small business can thrive while applying common sense fiscal responsibility.  I pledge to work within our state’s means without raising taxes.”
Largent states that he is looking forward to personally meeting every voter in the 120th district in the months ahead and that he is interested in hearing their concerns and thoughts as to how they can work together to “make a bright future for our district and our state.”
He earned his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice administration and master’s degree in public service administration from the University of Central Missouri.  He and his wife Leslie have two children, Taylor, 12, a student at Clinton Middle School; and Seth, nine, a student at Henry Elementary.  Leslie has taught at the Clinton High School for the last 14 years.
