In executive session, Holden resident Danny Crews was named new executive director of HOPE Coalition at last Thursday morning’s regular meeting, by attending members of the board.  His nomination is contingent upon the majority of the board voting to hire him for this position, as there was no quorum in attendance at the meeting.  If approved by the majority, Crews will begin his duties April 1, 2008.  He will replace outgoing director John Roberts.
In other business, current  Roberts told board members the Harvesters inspection went well and HOPE will remain an eligible Harvesters’ distribution point.
In continuing education news, Roberts told board members they should consider moving forward on hiring a GED teacher and getting classes started as soon as possible.  Board member Gerry Pierce has done some research in this area and has prices on what an instructor would cost.  The board discussed how they would pay the teacher, or what fund the money would be taken from for this purpose.  Board president Bob Mickey told Roberts he thought it was time to move forward and get started on this important program.
In Community Activity Center (CAC) news, Roberts told the board municipal elections are scheduled for April 8 at the CAC.  Elections have been held for two years at the CAC and all seems to go well at these events, according to Roberts.
In old news, Roberts reported he had relisted the Community Service Center (CSC) building with a local realtor per the board’s wishes.  He was told the realtor also has auction services available, should the board decide to pursue that avenue.
In memorial news, the board briefly discussed the Rusty Hartwell memorial and different options for that memorial.  Board member Scotty Walker asked if they could postpone making a decision at this time.  The board agreed.
In financial news, Roberts informed the board that HOPE will be audited March 31.  “We have been given a list of items to gather to start the process and are currently working on them,” said Roberts.
In new business, Roberts suggested to the board they might consider adding another board member to the board as there are times when they have trouble achieving a quorum for voting purposes.  The board will take this under consideration.
In other CAC news, Director of Activities Jennifer Loos gave her report on recent activities held at the CAC.  She told the board the last day of basketball leagues was March 12 and they went fairly well.  She added the last volleyball tournament is scheduled for March 29-30 and to her knowledge, all entry fees go to the CAC.
At the last meeting, Loos had presented the board with several options regarding rental agreements of the CAC.  She reported that the Chamber of Commerce had agreed to one of those recommendations, but added she will need a lot of volunteer help for set-up and clean-up.
In related news, Loos asked the board to approve prices for the CAC for all who wished to rent the building.  This included $2 per person for practices per hour; $100 per day, per event for the Chamber of Commerce (excluding the fair); and rental agreement policy and procedure.  The attending board members approved Loos’ proposals.
In upcoming event news, Loos said, “I am meeting with Kelli Spies to start scheduling dates of events that will take place this spring/summer so they do not conflict with any Holden school district camps/events.”
The regular meeting of the HOPE Coalition closed to reopen in April.
