One Holden Police officer position was cut and the budgeted money for that position was distributed to other policemen and city employees at a special meeting of the Holden City Council held Monday night at City Hall.
The city’s full time police officer slots were reduced from six to five. That gave the mayor and council the ability to give each officer a $3,000 raise effective with the next pay period. The starting police officer salary was also increased $3,000.
“This gives us the ability to be more competitive in a salary market where we had fallen behind,” explained Mayor Mike Wakeman. “Also, it will not affect the city’s police coverage as we will still have police presence 24 hours a day, seven days a week.”
Other full time city employees were given a $1,000 annual raise, or 50 cents per hour.
In a final personnel action, city treasurer Sharon Manford was given the additional title of assistant city clerk.

After being mired in a five-game losing skid, the Holden High School baseball Eagles turned it around last weekend winning four games in a span of approximately 24 hours.
They boys took both ends of a doubleheader from the Butler Bears Friday evening and came right back Saturday to defeat Lee’s Summit Community Christian and Higginsville in the continuation of the rain-suspended Holden Invitational Baseball Tournament. The four wins upped the Eagles season mark to 10-6 and Show-Me West Conference record to 4-2.
Holden had slipped to a 6-6 record after suffering a disappointing 11-9 loss at Sherwood last Wednesday.
Highlights and statistics of weekend games follow:
Eagles 10-12 Bears 0-1
In the first game of the double header with league foe Butler, Taylor McConville got his first start of the season on the mound and made the most of it, shutting out the Bears 10-0 and giving up only one hit while striking out six. He also helped himself at the plate, going two for three, with one runs batted in (RBI) and a run scored.
There were a lot of hitting stars in the contest as the Eagles knocked out 18 hits against Butler pitchers.
Stats included: Ryan Spilman, three of three with three runs; Justin McIntyre, three of four with four RBI and a run scored; Michael Garten, two of three with one RBI; A.J. Langston, three of four with two RBI; Aaron Johnson, one of two with an RBI; James Hood, one of three with one run scored; David Lerda, one run scored; and Jasper Carter, three of three with one RBI and three runs scored.
In the nightcap, the Eagles spread the Bears again in five innings, 12-1. Langston was the winning pitcher, going four innings and giving up two hits and no earned runs while striking out seven. Hood pitched the fifth, striking out the side to preserve the 11-point victory.
On the offensive side, Garten powered his third home run of the season while also going two of four with three RBI. Johnson was two of four with one run scored and two RBI; while Bryce Evans also knocked in two runs on a double and scored to more during the game.
Eagles 17 LSCC 5
Logan Evans was credited with the win, but it came at a high price as the senior suffered a season-ending injury. Evans was coming off the mound to field a ground ball in the fourth inning when he slipped and landed awkwardly breaking his ankle. He was immediately taken by ambulance to the hospital. In his three innings of work, he gave up one hit and two earned runs by striking out three.
He was relieved by Langston who gave way to junior Bryce Evans who quieted the situation. He pitched two perfect innings striking out three.
Once again, there were hitting heroes aplenty, with Spilman, McIntyre (2), and Hood rapping doubles. Hood also collected a triple in the blowout. Hood and Lerda led the way with two RBI, while Spilman, McIntyre, Garten, B. Evans and McConville each drove in one.
Eagles 14 Huskers 2
It was another five-inning spread for the surging Eagles as they downed Higginsville by 12 in five innings.
The Eagles headed into the bottom of the fifth inning ahead, 10-2. With Holden up by nine and the bases loaded, McConville shot a rocket into the right field corner which cleaned the bases and ended the ballgame.
With 12 total hits, Holden hammered five extra base hits. Along with McConville’s double, Langston crunched a round-tripper. Garten and Johnson had triples and Johnson added a double.
Leading the way with RBI was Langston with five. McIntyre and Johnson tallied two, while Garten and Lerda each totaled one.
Garten also went all the way on the mound, giving up two earned runs on five hits and a walk. He struck out four in the game.
Sherwood 11 Eagles 9
Holden won the home run derby, but the Marksmen won the game. The Eagles hit three homers with Spilman, L. Evans and Hood providing the big sticks. Sherwood could only manage one, but four Holden errors allowed seven Marksmen runs.
McIntyre took the loss going five innings and giving up four earned runs. He struck out seven. Garten finished the game giving up on unearned run on one hit in his inning of work.
L. Evans collected three RBI on his home run and McConville once again was big at the plate with two of three and three RBI.
The rest of the season will be more of a challenge for the Eagles as they have been bitten hard by the injury bug. Besides Evans’ broken ankle, first-baseman Jasper Carter injured his thumb in Friday night’s game and Zak Anstine will be out approximately two weeks after some minor surgery.
After playing at Lee’s Summit Christian Monday and hosting Pleasant Hill Tuesday, the Eagles are scheduled to finish the Holden Invitational Baseball Tournament Wednesday night at Eagle Field. They will finish the rain-suspended game with Odessa at approximately 6 p.m. and then play Renaissance Academy. On Thursday night, May 1, Holden will host O’Hara and they are scheduled to play Lone Jack at Kauffman Stadium Friday at 4 p.m.
