Kingsville High School held their high school graduation commencement program on Friday, May 9, 2008 at 7 p.m. in the Sears Gymnasium.
Twenty seniors received their diplomas and many were recognized for receiving scholarships.
Class valedictorian was Ashley Millican and salutatorian was Jamie Ring.
In her comments addressing her classmates, Millican said, “More than anything I want to say thank you. We all have different reasons for thanking each other, but I know we’re all blessed to have had each other as classmates. Know that tonight does not signify the end...but marks the beginning of the rest of our lives.”
She went on to encourage her fellow graduates by saying, “Think big when it comes to your dreams, but always remember where you came from. My biggest hope is that you do not limit yourself. Live life knowing, if there’s a will, there’s a way. Consider the words of Mark Twain when he said, ‘Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.’”
In her remarks, Ring told the class of 2008, “Of recent years, we are the first class with 85 percent of our classmates bound for higher education. We are a class filled with individuals who are planning to make it happen.” She went on to quote Christopher Reeves, saying, “So many of our dreams at first seem impossible, then they seem improbable, and then, when we summon the will, they soon become inevitable.”
In closing remarks, Ring added, “From this day forward, it is our choice to do what is best for us; it is our choice to seek out the path to success. No longer will teachers watch over us to encourage our productivity; our productivity now rests on our shoulders only.”

The Holden High School Lady Eagle softball team managed to get in three games around rainstorms last week to raise their season record to 8-8.
On last Monday, the girls shut out St. Paul’s Lutheran of Concordia, 9-0, at the City Hall softball field behind the one-hit pitching of mound ace Calla Burden. She struck out 14 without allowing a base on balls in the contest.
“Calla had a phenomenal game on the mound,” praised head softball coach Allison Corwin. “She is such a strong player. She also leads the team in batting average for the season with a .490 mark. She always finds a way to get the bat on the ball.”
The girls got the bats going in the game as well. Katey Jennings and Valerie Lambert each had two singles and a double; Jenna Brockhaus had one single and two doubles; Burden managed a single and a double; while Carla Arnone and Rachael Martin each smacked singles. Jennings and Faith Eissler each drove in two runs while Brockhaus and Arnone tallied one RBI apiece.
The coach also praised her infielders and catcher for their strong defense during the game. “This was a huge win for us,” the coach added.
On Tuesday evening, the Lady Eagles began Show-Me West Conference play with a doubleheader at St. Mary’s. The girls split with the Lady Trojans, winning the first game 5-0 and losing the second, 4-3.
“We played very solid in our first game,” Coach Corwin stated. “But in the second, errors cost us the win. We’ve had several games in the last two weeks and we’re going to have to stay mentally focused the rest of the way if we want the games to go the way we would like.”
Burden was once again in fine form in the first game, giving up only two hits and walking nine while striking out 12 in the shutout.
Hitting safely in the contest for the Lady Eagles included Jennings, one single; Moore, one single; Arnone, three singles; Fisher, Burden and Lambert, two singles apiece; Brockhaus, one single and a double; and Eissler, one double. RBI were driven by Brockhaus and Fisher, two apiece; and Arnone, one.
Burden had her good stuff in the second game against St. Mary’s ,striking out 13, allowing three hits and no walks, but the girls committed seven errors and lost by one run.
Hitting in the game were Jennings, double; Arnone, Brockhaus, Nici Hobbs and Fisher, with a single apiece; Lambert, single and a triple; Eissler, single and double; and Burden, single, triple and an inside-the-park homerun.
Rescheduling the double headers with Butler and Sherwood are still up in the air.
Scheduled at this time as the final game of the season and senior night will be a contest against Archie Wednesday, May 14 at the City Park softball field.
