With an eye to increasing city revenue, Holden mayor Mike Wakeman asked city council members to study the possibility of increasing the municipalities fee structure.
Wakeman distributed a list of recommendations to what he felt the increases should be.  The mayor proposed that dog and cat tags increase from $1.50 and $3 to $5 and $8 while business licenses would change from $25 to $100 to $50 for all.  Other proposed changes include:  reports and copies to increase from $3 to $5 (up to 15 pages); city hall rental from $25 per hour not to exceed a$100 to $100 flat fee and $50 for small room; and burn permits from no cost to $3.
Wakeman suggested that members study the situation and be ready to discuss at the upcoming budget meetings.
The council also discussed raising the deposit to dig in city streets.  Presently there is a $150 refundable deposit that would be returned if the digger returned the street to its normal condition.  The problem said street commissioner Larry Miller is that it costs more than $150 to fix a dig site and the city would lose money every time fixed the street and kept the deposit.  Miller suggested the deposit increase to $250 while councilman Jim Robison suggested $$500.  The item was also tabled to the budget meeting.
In other council business, the group passed Bill #05-20-08 which authorized the city to contract the services of Carolyn as a the grant administrator.
Liquor license renewals were granted to MFA Petroleum (Break Time), Lloyd’s Foods, Casey’s General Store, Cowboy Inn, Stumble Inn, Godfather’s Pizza, Galle’s Smokehouse and Grill; and Holden Package.  A one-time liquor consumption permit was given to Steven Danforth for a wedding reception at the Hallar Building from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. June 28-29.
In the mayor’s communications, a budget meeting was set for June 24 at 7 p.m. in City Hall and the regular July city council meeting was changed from July 8 to July 15 at 7 p.m.
In a final note, it was reported that work had begun on the Clay Street roadwork project.

The July 4 celebration in Holden is traditionally special, but this year it will be even more so as area holiday revelers will be treated to a “Vintage Base Ball” doubleheader.
The Holden Sesquicentennial-arranged event will take place at the Holden High School baseball field and will begin at 2 p.m. Both a nine-inning and a five-inning will be played with the Holden team’s competition coming from the New Baden Juniors of New Baden, IL.
Vintage base ball is played by the rules and customs of the 19th century and players or ballists, as they are sometimes called, will wear period reproduction costumes.  The New Baden team will play a group of Holden-area men, some of whom are from the adult slow-pitch softball league.
One of the more noticeable differences in playing vintage base ball over today’s modern baseball is the absence of gloves and sliding.
According to local businessman Bill Lewis who is responsible for bringing the vintage team from Illinois, “They will also bring their own umpire who from what I understand is part of the show.  He will be ‘sound wired’ so all will be able to hear his calls.”
There will also be a swimming and divising meet to be held at the Oasis Aquatic Center from 5 to 7 p.m. and ice cream will be served at approximately 8 to 9 p.m. before the fireworks begin at the City Park.

The event, which will be in a four-person scramble format is a fundraiser for the Holden Quarterback Club, whose mission is to support Holden football from flag, youth, tackle, middle and high school.
According to Spies, the tourney goal is to get 18 $100 hole sponsors contributing to offset the expense of organizing and hosting the tournament.  They would also consider two sponsorships of $50 per hole if necessary.
“We want to encourage as many alumni and friends of the Eagles to get involved in the tournament as possible to make this event a rewarding experience,” she stated.  “We would also like to thank everyone in advance for their help and support in making the tournament a success.”
