After watching their Eagle sisters defeat Crest Ridge at the Lotspeich Automotive Central Missouri Holiday Shootout Saturday, the Holden High School boys’ varsity basketball squad followed suit, squashing the Cougars, 54-33.
Played at the Multi-Purpose Center on the campus of the University of Central Missouri, the game saw Holden run off 13 unanswered points at the end of the first quarter and beginning of the second to take a strangle hold on the match.
The Eagles continued to increase their lead with a couple more scoring runs.  They led by 14 at the end of the first half and 21 by the conclusion of the third quarter.  All 13 Eagles on the shootout roster saw action, while 10 dented the statistics columns.
A sad note on the day was the loss for the season of senior guard/forward A. J. Langston who suffered a broken leg in the contest.
“We’ll miss A.J. the rest of the way,” Eagle head coach Dale Wescott said.  “But we were glad to see senior Trevor Yancey on the court for the first time this season after recovering from a leg injury of his own.”
Yancey made a difference in the game as he was very active from his point guard position scoring in double figures and dishing out three assists.  This was Holden’s first action since December 11 when they defeated Renaissance Academy.
“We’ve been a little tired of playing ourselves,” Coach Wescott stated.  “We haven’t had a game in quite a while and it was nice to get the younger kids in this one.”
Although the score indicated a blowout, the coach wasn’t totally pleased with all aspects of the game.  “We turned the ball over way too many times,” he said.  “Also, we need to work on our half court game more.  We run really smooth when we are in transition.  A lot of the half court problems can be explained by having so many players shuttling in and out.”
The coach praised his senior forward/center Deron Binkley for another good game on the glass.  “Deron was in double figures  in rebounds once again.  I also felt that Crosby Coleman had a nice game.”
Other statistics included:  Coleman, 14 points and seven rebounds; Yancey, 13 points, three rebounds and three assists; Binkley, six points and 10 rebounds; Zak Anstine, six points, three rebounds and two steals; Bryce Evans, five points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals; Kyle Elkins, four points; Jimmy Bryant, two points; Danny Tanksley, two points; Jacob Borgen, two points;  and David Lerda, three assists.
Also seeing action in the game were Langston and Josh O’Hora.
After a game at Archie on Tuesday, the Eagles will compete in the Pleasant Hill Invitational Basketball Tournament beginning Monday, January 12.
Winning Coach Wescott’s players of the week honors were Crosby Coleman, offense; Deron Binkley, defense; and Trevor Yancey, hustle.

The Holden High School Lady Eagles’ varsity basketball team used a balanced scoring attack to defeat Crest Ridge, 42-30, in the Lotspeich Automotive Central Missouri Holiday Shootout held Saturday at the Multipurpose Center on the campus of the University of Central Missouri.
The girls streaked to a 40-20 lead after quarters then coasted to the 12-point victory.  Six Lady Eagles scored between four and nine points in their first game after a more than three-week layoff for the holidays.
Holden used two runs of 6-0 and one of 8-0 to grab an insurmountable lead by halftime, 30-13.
“I was pleased with the effort and intensity we started the game with,” praised head Lady Eagle coach Travis Fleming.  “We executed well early on both ends of the floor and transitioned well for some easy baskets.  We limited Crest Ridge to just three baskets in the first half, but we committed too many fouls on shooting attempts and allowed them to stay in the game at the free throw line.”
The coach wasn’t as pleased with the girls’ end-of-game performance however, “It was nice to have a twenty-point cushion heading into the fourth quarter, but we lost focus.  We went one for nine from the floor and zero for four from the foul line.  The shots we took were the same as in the first half, but we just failed to finish.  It was not the way we wanted to finish bust overall we played hard and we don’t have any problems we can’t fix.”
Coach Fleming had good words for Lauren Geisler who started the game quickly scoring two buckets but had to sit most of the half due to foul trouble.  He also said that sophomore reserve Kelsey Holmes came in and played strong, taking her shots out of the offense and getting a lot of deflections in the Eagles’ press.  “The lift that Kelsley Holmes and Kelsey Whitehead provided off the bench made the difference in the first half,” Coach Fleming added.
Statistics in the win which gave the Lady Eagles a 4-1 record for the young season include:  Kelsey Carver, nine points, four rebounds and two steals; Holmes, eight points, one rebound and one steal; Stacey Calhoun, six points, six rebounds and three steals; Whitehead, six points, four rebounds and three steals; Calla Burden, five points, five rebounds and one steal; Valerie Lambert, four points, one rebound and eight steals; Geisler, four points, four rebounds and one steal; Lauren Adams, two rebounds and one steal; Jenna Brockhaus, one steal; and Katie Passler, two steals.
After a home non-conference matchup with Sherwood Tuesday, the Lady Eagles will participate in the Pleasant Hill Invitational Basketball Tournament beginning Monday.
For his players of the week, Coach Fleming selected Kelsey Holmes, offense; Valerie Lambert, defense and Stacey Calhoun, hustle.

According to Holden High School wrestling coach John Jones, his grapplers competed in the toughest tournament that Holden has ever attended besides the state tournament.  He was speaking of the Harrisonville Christmas Tournament held December 19.
“The tourney which is comprised of the best Class 1 and Class 2 schools  in Missouri also has schools from other states that are ranked in the top five of their state.”  Teams from Oklahoma and Kansas were in attendance.  Winning the meet was Deer Creek, OK.
“This was our first time to compete in a non-district two-day tournament and Harrisonville’s Christmas tournament is considered one of the tough Class 2 Tournaments around,” the coach commented.
The Eagles finished in 16th place, topping area programs such as Clinton and Grain Valley.
“After one day, we were in the middle of the pack, but the toll of wrestling two days began to wear on us,” Coach Jones continued.  “We began losing to opponents that we shouldn’t have.  But, for us to finish where we did considering the level of competition that we faced is a testament to our wrestlers stepping up their game.  One of our team goals is to have a state place-winner and for us to do that we have to be able to battle in highly competitive situations such as this.  This only helps our athletes prepare for down the road.”
The highest individual placement in the tournament was senior Zach Lavely who won fifth place in the 171-pound division .  Other placers included:  Billy Fannin, sixth, 135 pounds; Kevin Kephart, eighth, 285 pounds; Stephen Parker, seventh, 130 pounds; Zach Turner, 10th, 140 pounds; Cody Jennings, 11th, 152 pounds; David Carter, 12th, 160 pounds; James Gray, 13th, 189 pounds; and Doug Carter, 14th, 125 pounds.
Coach Jones awarded senior Zach Lavely the wrestler of the week honor.
Junior Varsity Wrestling
Eagle JV grapplers also competed in a tournament at Harrisonville, December 13.
Winning first place in their classes included Jake Giffin and Cody Jennings, who went 4-0 and 4-1 respectively for the tourney.
Other finishers were:  Doug Carter, second, 3-1; Trever Glynn, third, 3-2; and David Carter, third, 3-2.  Also competing with their tourney records were Spencer O’Neil, 1-3; Tim Howton, 2-3; and Billy McBride, 2-3.
“We had some wrestlers who have never participated in the sport before,” Coach Jones added.  “It was great to see everybody get at least one win at the tournament.”
